First of all Veronica and I drove back to Louisiana to babysit for the week. Then we starting cutting fabric scraps in an attempt to tame Veronica's scraps. They were getting a little out of hand.

She has boxes and bags of them taking over the house. She's been cutting 1 1/2", 2" and 2 1/2" strips. She has lots off leftovers for her mini string star too. She has decided to challenge herself to "use the rotary cutter" everyday in October. She's hoping to get quite a bit done. She told her friend Tina and Tina thought that was a great idea. Now Tina has joined in on the fun. We'll see what they get done.

Then we took another trip to Mama's Quilt Shop. It's so friendly and inviting. If you're ever near Independence Louisiana, you should stop in. Brenda is a wonderful shop owner and very knowledgeable. They've got lots of fabric, notions and patterns.

Veronica got her yellow challenge that Carol had them working on done, aka, "the sweatshop" challenge. She ended up with 2 tops for 2 granddaughters.

Well, we're off to "work" some more on those scraps.

Veronica has been sewing away on her beloved Juki sewing machine. She started with a challenge last Wednesday. Her friend Carol said they were going to use up some fabric! Veronica told Carol she was in. Veronica decided she wanted to get rid of her yellow fabric stash. She doesn't like yellow, but she sure does have a ton of it.

So she cut cut yellow till she had over 100 2 1/2" strips for the pattern Carol said they were working on. Then off she went to the sew-in that Dayton Quilt Guild had. They sewed all day, they raced sewing fabric strips. They were maniacs! But they were having fun. They talked about all the memories in these fabrics strips. A few came from some friends who have passed away, but there were still some great memories of shopping trips and "what the heck possessed me to buy this fabric". At night she came home to work on her mini stars. She says they're a beast, she has so many seams using her tiny scraps, but her Juki sews right thru them like shes sewing butter. Butter, Yum! Sorry, this bear loves to eat.

She's been working on a lot of stuff, she even sewed mini yo-yos on the drive to Louisiana for her granddaughter's birthday party. Then she worked on hexies going the other way. Shes says she's cleaning up fabrics, using them up, putting them in quilts so they'll leave her house. She does have a lot of fabric. She's challenged herself to get it done.
Shes' s got the orange challenge going with Mattie, Quiltsmart's owner. If you're interested in joining the Bitty Lone Star Challenge, you can find that on Bear Thread Design's Instagram at BTDQSFall Lone Star Challenge. You've got time, it doesn't start till October 1st. She's thinking of new challenges. We'll see how long she keeps this up. Stay tuned for more adventures with Veronica and Jaggie.
Do you ever wonder where all the samples at your local quilt shop come from? Sometimes the employees make them, sometimes customers make them. Different shops have different formulas for calculating how you"get paid" for the samples.

Some stores have you pay half of the cost, some give you the fabric and pattern, you make the quilt and after a certain amount of time, the sample is yours. Sometimes the stores pay you to make them and the samples are theirs.

Well, I've been making samples for local shops for years, probably 20 years or so. I've never had a problem, I usually get the quilts after about 3 months, they like to rotate every quarter or so. I agreed to make 6 quilts for a local shop that I had not made samples before, so I asked how long they would keep them. I was told about 6 months or so. That was fine, I was in no hurry to get them. I guess I should have gotten that in writing.

I delivered the quilts to them June 1, 2017. Every time I asked for my "quilts", I was told I couldn't have them 'yet'. So yesterday was September 11, 2018, I thought it's been long enough, it's been 1 year, 3 months and 11 days. I wanted my quilts, so I called and said we were coming to get them. My daughter fell in love with 2 and so those were hers. On the way out, my daughter was stopped and told that the quilts she had were not what me and the "person in charge had agreed on" me taking home. Apparently, we were only going to get half. Huh? Nope, too late!

I will not name the shop or the "person in charge" who by the way is no the owner of the shop. Not really sure what her position is, she acts like the person in charge, but I don't really think she is. I will never make samples for this shop again. I will get everything in writing from now on, I used to just believe that a persons word was their "word:.

I've learned my lesson.
Oh, yes, we've been busy quilting away. Trying to empty "The Box". Well, let me tell you about "The Box". It's just an ordinary white box that says UFO'S 1990's. At first, I thought it was from outer space, but then Veronica explained that it was a box of unfinished objects. So why isn't it called UO? Right? Even this bear knows that unfinished is one word. Silly humans. So, anyway, in this box there were lots of unfinished quilt projects.

Veronica pulled out something she called a watercolor quilt. Looked like a bunch of squares to me. She said it was a bunch of squares but when she finished it, it was a really cute wreath quilt. She said it's a little more yellow than she wanted, but she's happy that it's done. Well, at least the top is done.

She also found some quilts partially completed from a week of classes with Trudie Hughes, way back in 1993! Now that's like a thousand years ago. She said one only needed the border, so she got that one done. She said it was already cut for her. She had 4 others that were partially sewn together and some that were cut.

She found some paper piecing papers, she said they would be little stars when put together.

She's been happily sewing every day, and half the night on her Juki DX7, she's in hog heaven now that she's got her Juki to sew on. She says her Juki is the gift that keeps giving. It gives her hours of fun, fun, fun. I hear her singing I love my Juki, I love my Juki, I love my Juki. Every once in a while, I hear say, I love that the thread cutter is on the foot pedal. She says this saves her so much time. And the light is so very bright. You can see everything! Oh and that presser foot that comes up when she stops sewing, it's amazing!!! She was up to 4 this morning sewing. I even took some pictures, they were kinda dark, but she's at it again, so I'll get some more this morning.
I had to go babysit a human baby for a week. They sure do cry a lot! I'm hiding every chance I get! Do you see me? Where am I? Why, I'm under the pile of course.

Veronica and I get to stay in the RV at night, it's nice and quiet. We set up the most fabulous quilting area. She says it's called "Glamping", hmmm, not sure, but ok, I'm game, I'll go with it.

So our first night here, we pulled out all the quilting goodies that Veronica brought. Here is every Deb Tucker ruler and Technique Sheet that Studio 180 sells. Boy, are we gonna have some fun!

Veronica brought enough fabric to equal the local quilt shop. We'll be going over there one day this week to check out all her new stuff. It's called Mama's Quilt Shop, in Independence, Louisiana. The owner, Brenda, is fabulous, we just love her.

Once we got everything set up the way we wanted it, Veronica decided she needed to get the last 12 blocks made for the charity quilt she's working on. She found 30 Grandmother's Fan blocks in "the Box", that's what she called it, honest. (Next week's post will be all about "the Box").

I was really confused, looked like a regular box to me and it was full of fabric. So anyway, she set to work getting the blocks finished. She worked on them at Lakeview Quilt Guilds Sew-In last week and got 18 done. She got the other 12 finished now, so all she has to do is put them together and quilt it.

The whole time she was sewing I heard her muttering about how she wished she had her Juki machine here, seems it has a "foot" that comes "up" when she stops sewing for a sec. She said it sure would be easier sewing curves that way. Then she explained that she brought her "mechanical" Bernina that is 30 years old. Said she felt comfortable leaving it in the RV when we're not around.

She said it was a workhorse, but I didn't see a fluffy tail on it like my horse has. Anyway, she managed to get them finished even if she did use her workhorse. So, I guess that's good.

Next up is finishing more stuff from "the Box" using her Deb Tucker rulers. Ooohhh, I can't wait...

Those pictures will get posted on Instagram as we get them done.
I have been on many adventures since my last post. We've had so many changes in the past few years its had to keep up with, but I'm back and ready to talk quilting and traveling!

I went to a Mardi Gras party a while back and I really enjoyed the atmosphere, so I kept the party going, moving poolside for the summer.

Last week Veronica and I had a Quiltsmart Mondo/Midi/Bitty Class at the Island Quilt Guild in Galveston, TX. I say "we", but once we crossed the bridge onto the Island, I left Veronica to go check out this "blue water" they've been having while she headed on to teach the class. Lucky for me, I had already gotten a base tan at our home pool, so after a little sunscreen, I sat back to enjoy the sunshine while she and the class attendees made some awesome bags. (I really should have had Veronica make me one to hold my beach towel and sunglasses).

If you haven't made a Mondo/Midi/Bitty bage yet, what are you waiting for? Veronica teaches classes, so if you are interested in having your Bee, Guild or group host a class you can email her at VLCox@live.com. We've made many over the years, but these are some of our favorites.

Have you made a Quiltsmart bag? What's your favorite style to make?
First of all, we got on the Global blacklist. So we got off of that, we hope. The the new computer, 2 months old, blew a gasket. Then Jaggie got a new phone and all of the pictures from the last cruise and Myrtle Beach just disappeared. Samsung girl, said something about we have to do this and that and I don't know what else. Well, we're off another cruise, computer is still with the "Geeks" at Best Buy, so we're going on vacation till the 2nd of March. Hopefully March will be a better month.
Our Quilting classes/ Workshops are held during "at sea" days and we schedule classes outside of port time. Our goal is to make your quilting/cruising experience a true pleasure and memorable. The quilting classes will challenge the quilter by adding some new tools/ techniques to their quilting tool box, while achieving success. We will live, laugh, learn, and go home with lots of memories of our quilting cruise. This class is to be a fun, no pressure day of sewing. Lynn will cover scrap quilt theory, precise piecing and designing on a wall. Fabrics from you stash can be used to make this delightfully scrappy version of a traditional Puss in a Corner quilt. The 64" x 81" size is great for naps. The wonderful thing about scrap quilts is that if you are having fun you can make a larger quilt but if you want to stop with a smaller project that also works.

I found another picture from our cruise. Can you see it, it's kinda' hard. There is an Indian, a construction worker, a police officer, do you see where I'm going with this? Yes, the whole atruim, from deck 2 to 13 were singing YMCA! Yes, we were. What a fun time. They even had John Travolta join us. Ok, so I guess it wasn't the real John Travolta, but he was pretty good looking anyway, or so the ladies said. I ran off to the dining room,I heard they had a bowl of blueberries, yuuuummmmy, my favorite.
This one will be taking us away from home for a whole month. We're leaving on Monday morning. Our first stop will be in Florida, yes, we're going to go to Scott's store. We'll actually only be there for one night before Scott, Veronica and I jump in his van and drive up to Myrtle Beach. Why are we going to Myrtle Beach? Well, remember Debbie Caffery?

Well, she's got a retreat in Myrtle Beach and we're going! I miss her, she is a grrrrreat hugger. We'll be there for a while and then we're off to Florida. Veronica will be staying with one of her friends and we'll hit 3 guilds, including the Martin County Quilt Guild. Veronica will be there giving a lecture and workshop. Then we're off to Austin, Texas for a few days for the Modern Quilt Guild Show, then we fly back to Florida, hop aboard another cruise ship and sail off to the Caribbean once again. Then we finally come home in March, or we might stay for another quilt show in Tampa.
We got done at noon. Scott and Veronica put all the machines up and then we had a farewell party, After the farewell party we went to dinner. We had pork chops and mashed potatoes, oh, so good, they have the best mashed potatoes. After dinner, Michelle, the travel agent on this cruise came to our room to talk to us. Vickie jumped in the shower at about 6:45 p.m. (time is important). Now keep up, here we go--the best part. So half way through her shower, Vickie screams out, (why?, you ask). Seems all the power went out on the ship. Yep, really, it did. So after we figure out that we are not the only ones in the dark, we get the iPad for Vickie to have some light. We sent Michelle back to her room, and darn if she didn't have power. So we sit in the dark. Then Veronica decides she's going to take her shower. About 8:00 p.m. the Captain says "ladies and gentlemen, ... we seem to have a water leak", WHAT??? Water leak? Not good, we're IN the water. So 8:01 p.m. and we're out of our room. They announce they're going to have a comedian in the half of the ship that has power. so off we go. Then our cabin steward tells us that decks 0 and 1 are flooded. Ok, where are the life jackets? Where is my life boat? Stay calm, we don't need them...yet. Ok, 9:30 p.m. we go back to our room, WE GOT ONE GLOW STICK!!!!! That'll take care of the dark cabin, the dark halls, try going to potty in the dark. Ok, we're fine. We're in a sauna, so maybe I'll lose some weight tonight. We call Scott, he's got power, he's upset cause he has no TV, Really? I'm sleeping with my clothes and a life jacket on in the dark and he wants TV!

So now Veronica decides she's going to try to get some sleep, 'cause she has to drive us home tomorrow. So she gets her jammies on, gets in bed but only after they set up a "trap" for anyone trying to sneak into their room, 'cause they are going to sleep with the doors open. Here is the"trap" in case you need one. Put a table in front of the door, then a chair and then the garbage can. Then if somebody sneaks in, you'll here a couple of tha, thunks and then you get up and beat him with your glow stick!

Well, we were almost asleep and Scott pops in to "protect" us. I guess from the other glow sticks on our deck. He had a little light, and he's swinging it like a disco ball, that was fun. Good thing I didn't have a seizure. Then at midnight, the Captain says, Ladies and ... a little worse than we thought..., what, now deck 2 is flooded. Yikes, it's coming up! Then our cabin steward, Taylor and his supervisor, Allison decide we need light. They bring a 4 foot long light bulb to tape it to our door. When Veronica saw Allison with it, she said "Are we having Star War battles?" Allison says, "who is your father" and after we died laughing Veronica says "no,no,no, it's Luke, I am your father" then they proceeded to tape the flood light to out door. You could land a jet, and we're trying to go to sleep. We kick Scott out, crawl under the blankets and gets a couple hours of sleep. Nobody tried to get in our room, Taylor and Allison patrolled our halls all night long. Their rooms were on deck 1, they told us in the morning that their rooms were flooded. We got dressed in the dark, went to eat breakfast and got off the ship.

Here is our ship again, Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas.

It left a day late, so I guess they got the "leak" fixed. What an adventure! I guess they have better PR people than Carnival.
Here I am, sailing away in Cayman. We had fun, fun, fun. We shopped till we dropped. We took lots of pictures, but again, they're gone. So we got lots of walking in. We went and had the best fish sandwich ever. Check out my new clothes. We got these in Jamaica. I got a Rasta hat, I love it. My shirt says Jamaica on the back. Thanks Scott, he always buys the best clothes.

Day 5 we arrived in Cozumel. Yes, that great fish sandwich caused Veronica to have achy joints, so we took a taxi into town. We went to the swing bar. No not a swinging bar, a swing bar. They don't have seats to sit on, they have swings. So we ate lunch while in our swing. We had an awesome lunch. We love this restaurant. This donkey was outside the restaurant. I just had to jump on for a picture. Isn't he cute?

Oh, and I got a balloon bracelet. See it on my wrist? This is my bed, I have to share with Veronica because Vickie is in the other bed.
It was great right up until the day before we got home. This was a very memorable trip. We had no wi-fi in Jamaica, or Cayman or Cozumel. We took lots and lots of great pictures, but Kevin got Veronica a new smartphone on Sunday and they lost all the pictures in the transfer. Let's just say she is not a happy camper right now. See is so mad, she's returning the phone and getting back her crappy phone that does not lose pictures.

We did get one of me, Jaggie in class with Scott. Check out my VIP tag, I got that from the cruise people. It really should be a VIB, you know Very Important Bear. We'll, let it go, this time.

So let's start on day one. Veronica's been having a little more difficult time with her food sensitivities and allergies this past month, and she didn't want to be sick on the cruise so she decided she would tell the food staff before she went. All the paperwork was in and they told her to check in with the chef on day one. So there they all go to see the chef and discuss food. All went well, until dinner. Veronica ordered a Caesar Salad, she got a bowl of lettuce, she asked for the cheese, they told her she couldn't eat cheese. She told them she just wanted a little bit, she told them she could handle that, sooooooooo, they brought her a huge bowl of cheese. She took half a teaspoon and sprinkled it on her salad, then they passed the bowl around and everybody at the table got more cheese, when it came back around it still looked full. Then on the first night in the room, Veronica sneezed and coughed all night long, Vickie and I were about to throw her overboard! Vickie got up and put in earplugs. Poor Vickie.

Then day 2, we were sailing away and sewing and then dinner comes along, same thing. Veronica got a sweet potato with her meal and she was so happy. The chicken was ok, nothing to write home about, and then they get to the room. More sneezing and coughing, so now we're figuring it's got to be something in the room. This is the only place this happens.

Day 3, we get to Jamaica, and Mr. Walker picks us up. He always picks us up and drives us where we need to go when we go to Jamaica. So he takes us to Negril, it's 2 hours away but a great beach. Nobody was there, it was great. I got to be the lifeguard, but those pictures got lost. We ate cheeseburgers, fish, shrimp, lots of fries and even took a dip in the water. Do you know that everybody honks their horns in Jamaica. You honk, hang out the window and yell at people, you yell to say hi, you yell for them to get out of the way, you yell at them to tell the person you hit you're sorry and keep on going. We had a great time and we even went shopping when we got back. Here is a picture of our ship on the way back to it.

Yeah, ours is the little one. The one next to us was the Oasis of the Seas, we were on Serenade of the Seas.

So when we got back, we were informed that because Veronica mentioned the sneezing and coughing in the cabin, they had steamed and wiped down our room with vinegar. They changed the filters and the took all of the towels and linens and washed them in a special soap. Guess what, no sneezing, or coughing! Yippppeeee!

So tomoroow I'll tell you all about Cayman, I gotta go check things out in the warehouse. You know this bear is nosy.

Jaggie here, Veronica and I sailed away on Saturday from New Orleans on a quilt cruise. You know the speaker that we had at Dayton last week. Well, I put her in my suitcase and took her with us. Ok, not really. She works for Veronica and so we decided that we had so much fun with her at work that we would have a blast on a cruise with her. Tomorrow we will be in Jamiaca and we will try to get you some pictures, but if we can't find wi-fi, we won't be able to. On Wednesday we'll be in Grand Cayman and Thursday we will be in Cozumel. I know we'll have wi-fi in Cozumel and pretty sure we can get it in Cayman, so plan to see pictures of our trip.
I had to go to downtown Houston on Tuesday for jury duty. It is our civic duty, but this was just a waste of my time, 35 other people's time and the tax payers money. It was over the placement of a dumpster! I told them that it was insane to be there over a dumpster and they booted me out! I kinda' wish they had let me on the jury. Oh well...I wasn't able to get anything done for the blog, but tomorrow' will be really, really good. Promise!
I did get to read quite a bit though, so I guess it was ok. But the marble benches...hard on this old behinney and cold!
Everyone had such a great time at retreat. It's ashamed it's over. The good news is that Veronica's retreat group meets 4 times a year and they have such a great time at retreat. The group is from all over, quilters come from the Houston area, the Dallas area, Waco, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Sometimes this is the only time they get to see each other. So they really look forward to these great retreats. This retreat had three newbies. Welcome to our group!

This is Veronica's new light. The girls at retreat bring 2 gifts to exchange in a white elephant game. There is a lot of stealing, and lots of laughter. Soooooo...... till April, when the next retreat is . The group will try a new place in Huntsville, Texas, it's called 12 Pines. This retreat was a Margie's retreat house in La Grange, Texas. Yes, La Grange was made famous by Marvin Zindler and the Chicken Ranch. Texas is full of surprises!

They made us feel so at home. They got such a kick out of this quilt. You should have heard the laughter, it made Veronica feel so good. She wasn't sure if they would get her humor on "yellow snow"!

There are quite a few that meet at Luby's for dinner before the meeting, so we got a chance to sit and talk with some of the members before the meeting. What a great time! I wish this guild was closer so we could join and become a member.

Veronica had over 40 quilts that were all made from her 9 patch monthly exchange group. It was such a fun group. Hopefully we'll get back to the guild for another visit.

Just a sampling of what we're taking to retreat. We've got 3 suitcases full of stuff to work on. We'll be showing you finished projects as we get them done. How about you, do you go to retreat? We love them, we have so much fun, we laugh and eat and stay up half the night. It's just a lot of fun, Think about getting a group together and doing a retreat if you've never been on one.
