Are you planning on attending the Oregon Summer Quilt Expo this week? Veronica starts over each day with her lecture, "A Walk on the Wild Side". It is an hour-long presentation which includes discussion of raw edge applique, showing of 50+ quilts that can also be passed around for up close viewing by attendees, and a demonstration on the technique and explanation of tools and methods used. The lectures are free with expo ticket.

There is a lot to explore at this expo. There are 70 vendors with a variety of products, tools, patterns and fabric ... All specifically targeting the quilting community. You can also enjoy a variety of exhibits including National Quilt Exhibits, Sew Batik Challenge, Hoffman Challenge, Pilgrim/Roy and Route 66.

Countdown Oregon Summer Quilt Expo

Veronica and Jaggie are a week away from the start of the Oregon Summer Quilt Expo! 

Come hear Veronica's lecture, "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" at the Oregon Summer Quilt Expo in Redmond, OR  July 11 - 14!  She will have multiple lecture times so be sure to plan your schedule so you can attend one.

Join her for this great trunk show where we'll pass around approximately 50 quilts all made using fusible web and The Appliqué Pressing Sheet. You won't believe that these wildlife quilts, wild flower quilts and wild and wacky chickens and crows are all made using this easy technique. There will be a short demo on the process and lots of tips and tricks to get these amazing results for your quilts. She will talk about the tools she uses and how you too can create beautiful quilts.

Michelle's Mystery: A Work in Progress

Hi all! It's been two weeks since I last posted about the mystery quilt. We've got a lot going on at BTD offices and mom (Veronica) has been traveling the past few weeks, but we are all chugging away on our quilts.

While working on mine recently, I made a classic quilter discovery ... I laid my blocks out wrong and fell in love!!

This is the original layout that Jaggie showed you in the last step of the mystery quilt. Classic pattern, always a good choice. But ... I unknowingly inverted my chevron blocks and made diamonds!!

I loved it but I also love **not** following a pattern perfectly. I always alter at least one thing, regardless of the craft. I took a vote among family, friends and co-workers and it was unanimous- the diamond block was the favorite. So I will layout my blocks in the original pattern for a photograph, but in the end, my "accident" wins!

Jaggie's Mystery Step # 8

Hi, Jaggie here.  This is the last of the instructions for my mystery quilt.  Join the blocks together in 4 rows of 3.  Add your borders, the first is a 1 1/2" border of accent #1.  The second is a border of focus fabric, cut 5 1/2" and it will finish at 5".

That's it.  Send us some pictures so we can post them for all to see.

Michelle's Mystery Creating Chevrons

Well I am happy to say that yesterday I was able to work on my mystery quilt more than I thought I'd be able to in one day.

 

My husband had drill (Army Reserves) and must toddler spent Saturday night at my parents' house, so after the usual weekend chores and grocery shopping, I sat down and was able to spend some time at the sewing machine. In fact, after both my boys came home, they went next door to swim and I got almost another hour in (while catching up on some of my favorite TV shows on my iPad!) It was a great day! 

 

So for those who are working on the mystery quilt, are you having fun!?! Are you excited to start putting blocks together?

I am trying to figure out what I want to do with the extras that I cut from the flying geese and leftover fabric. Do you usually do something with it? Save for later, integrate into the quilt like a border or designs on backing or do you make something to go with it like a pillowcase or drawstring bag? I've always wanted to make a matching pillowcase for a quilt. What do you think?

 

 

Jaggie's Mystery Quilt Part #6

Make 48 four patch units using two half-square triangles and a 3" X 3" square of background fabric and focus fabric.

I had to use Michelle's fabric as this week's example because I am spending the weekend with her and her toddler while Veronica is out of town.

Michelle's Mystery: Flying Geese

I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother’s Day!! Did you get any quilting done? I did!!

My husband is entering his last week of law school finals … for the first semester … and to ensure that he could study, my little Monkey and I headed to my parents’ house for a fun-filled day where my toddler and Jaggie jumped on Grammie and Happy’s bed, regardless of us telling them to stop. Seriously, those two are trouble, but for once it wasn’t there bear’s fault!

In between rescuing them from high-flying antics I was able to get some work done on my mystery quilt and I am **almost** caught up … if things don’t get too hectic this week.

I spent some time with flying geese this weekend and let’s just say, there was less of a mess than “actual” flying geese! I worked on both sets, I think from weeks 3 and week 4 … and once I got into a rhythm the geese were “flying”. I almost finished them, just a few more left – hopefully I can get them done tonight.  

I am so excited be at the part where we start putting it together! Eek! I’ll post photos next week, as I forgot to take photos while I was “in the zone”. I hope you’ll share your photos with us too, just visit our Facebook page!

Jaggie's Mystery Quilt part #5

Here we go with Step #5.  This one is really easy, you'll have it done lickity split fast.  I know all of you have all of their flying geese done, so here we go.  Take your Step #3 units and sew your Step #4 units to them.  If your looking at your goose and he looks like he's flying up, you need to have your Step # 3 at the bottom and add Step #4 unit to the top of that one.  This will look lie you're building a Chevron.  I'm sorry, but I can't add the picture right now, no one is here to help me.  I'm just a bear after all.  Don't worry though, I'll get some pictures on later today.
